Free Up Storage on Your Phone by Clearing Old Videos
“Storage almost full” usually means videos: films you finished weeks ago, the same forward saved three times from three WhatsApp groups, a 4 GB download you forgot about. Cleaner apps want to scan everything and show ads. VideoPlayer already knows which videos you’ve watched to the end, so it can help you free up storage with one honest list — and nothing is deleted until you confirm.
How to free up storage with VideoPlayer
- Open Settings → Storage → Free up space. (If finished videos take 1 GB or more, a Free up 3.2 GB card also appears on the Folders tab — tap Review.)
- Look through the three groups below. Ticked videos will be deleted; tap any row to untick it.
- Tap Delete 6 · free 3.2 GB.
- Android shows its own confirmation. Tap Allow and the space is freed.
What the storage cleaner looks for
| Group | What’s in it | Ticked? |
|---|---|---|
| Finished watching | Videos you played to the end | Yes |
| Duplicates | The same video saved more than once (same size, same length) — the oldest copy is kept | Yes |
| Big videos | Files over 1 GB you haven’t finished | No — your choice |
Each row shows a thumbnail, size and folder, so you can see exactly what goes. Use Select all or Clear on a group to change it quickly.
Is it safe?
- Nothing is removed without two confirmations — your tap, then Android’s system dialog.
- Only videos are touched. Photos, documents and apps are never in the list.
- Duplicates keep one copy, always the oldest, so the original stays.
- Deleting is permanent on most phones — have a quick look before you tap Delete.
Older Android phones
Deleting other apps’ files from inside an app needs Android 11 or newer. On Android 10 and older, the screen still shows what can go and how much space it frees, with a note to delete those files from your Files or Gallery app.
The Folders card
When videos you’ve finished add up to 1 GB or more, a small card appears at the top of the Folders tab. Close it with ✕ and it stays hidden until another 1 GB of watched videos builds up — it won’t nag you every day.
More ways to free up storage
- Keep only the best bit of a long recording with the video cutter, then delete the original.
- Keep only the song from a music video with video to audio — a few MB instead of hundreds.
- Finished a series? Continue watching marks every episode as Watched, so they all land in the first group.
- Turn off auto-download of media in WhatsApp group settings to stop duplicates piling up.
Free up storage as a habit
A quick look once a month, or after you finish a series, keeps the phone from filling up at the worst moment. Free up storage before a trip or a family function too — that’s when you’ll want room to record new videos.
Google’s help page lists other ways to free up space on Android.
