Video Cutter: How to Cut a Clip From Any Video on Android
You want to send the two minutes of the wedding where your cousin dances — not the whole 2.4 GB video. Or a funny moment from a lecture, or a goal from a full match. Most “video cutter” apps add a watermark, show ads or upload your file. VideoPlayer has a video cutter built in: pick a start and end, tap Save, and the clip lands in your gallery.
How to cut a clip with the video cutter
- In the library, long-press the video.
- Choose Cut a clip.
- Drag the two handles to set the start and end. The preview shows the start frame and the length updates as you go.
- Tap Save clip. A progress bar shows the work; when it’s done the clip is in Movies/VideoPlayer.
- Tap Share to send it straight away.
Quality and speed
- MP4 files are cut using trim optimisation: only the frames around the cut points are re-encoded, so the clip keeps the original quality and saves quickly.
- Other formats (MKV, AVI and so on) are converted to MP4 (H.264 video, AAC sound), which plays on every phone, laptop and app.
- No watermark, ever.
If the clip saves without sound
Some films use DTS or E-AC3 sound that the phone’s converter can’t re-encode. Rather than failing, VideoPlayer saves the clip without sound and tells you so. In that case, try a different audio track of the same file, or a copy of the video with AAC audio.
What people cut
| Video | Clip |
|---|---|
| Wedding or function recording | The varmala, a speech, a dance |
| Full cricket or football match | A wicket, a goal, a last over |
| Recorded class | One explanation to share with friends |
| Long phone recording | The funny 20 seconds |

- WhatsApp status: split a longer video into 30-second or 60-second parts and send them all at once — see WhatsApp status video.
- Save audio: keep only the sound as a music file — see video to audio.
- Just a still? Take a screenshot from the player instead.
Everything happens on your phone with Android’s own media encoder. The video never leaves your device.
Video cutter tips for clean clips
- Leave a second at each end. A clip that starts mid-word or ends mid-laugh feels abrupt. A little breathing room looks more natural.
- MP4 saves fastest. Because only the frames near the cut are re-encoded, a 2-minute MP4 clip saves in seconds. MKV and other formats are converted frame by frame, so they take longer — roughly in proportion to the clip length.
- Keep clips short for sharing. WhatsApp and email have size limits; under three minutes usually goes through anywhere. For longer moments, use WhatsApp status parts.
- Cut first, delete later. Once your clip is saved, the original can go — free up storage shows what’s taking space.
Used this way, the video cutter turns a huge recording into a few small files worth keeping.
The cutting is done with Google’s Media3 Transformer, the same library many video editors use.
