How to Jump to a Scene in a Long Video — the Scene Grid
DVDs used to have a “scene selection” menu: a page of pictures from the film, and you picked where to start. Downloaded videos lost that, and the seek bar is a poor replacement — drag, peek, drag again. VideoPlayer’s Scenes view brings it back: a grid of frames spread across the whole video, so you can jump to a scene just by recognising it.
How to open the scene grid
- Tap the video to show the controls.
- Tap the ⋮ (More) button and choose Scenes. (You can also pin Scenes to the quick bar.)
- Frames fill in within a second or two. Tap any one to jump to a scene there.
The frame closest to where you are now is outlined, so you always know your place in the film.
How many scenes are shown?
VideoPlayer spreads up to 36 frames evenly across the video — one every few minutes in a feature film, closer together in a short clip. Each one shows its time underneath. The frames are taken from the video’s keyframes with the built-in FFmpeg decoder, so it works with MKV, HEVC and 10-bit files where the phone’s own thumbnailer often shows nothing.
When to jump to a scene with the grid
- You remember what it looked like: the night-time chase, the wedding, the beach.
- Long recordings: a three-hour function video, a lecture series, a match.
- Showing someone a moment without making them sit through the build-up.
- Checking a video quickly before deciding whether to watch or delete it.
Three ways to find a moment
| You remember… | Use |
|---|---|
| What it looked like | Scene grid |
| Roughly when it was | Seek bar preview — drag and watch the frame |
| What someone said | Dialogue search — type the words |
Found something you’ll want again? Add a bookmark — it shows as a yellow dot on the seek bar.
Good to know
- Works with videos on your phone. Network streams can’t be scanned ahead of time, so the grid isn’t offered for links.
- Frames stay ready. Close the grid and reopen it, and it appears instantly for the same video.
- Light on the battery. Frames are decoded once, at a small size, in the background.
Jump to a scene in long family and event videos
The scene grid is at its best with long videos that have no chapters: a four-hour wedding, a school annual day, a full cricket match recorded on a phone, a CCTV export. Instead of dragging through hours of footage, open the grid and you can jump to a scene — the varmala, your child’s dance, the last over — by recognising it from its picture.
Once you’re close, use the seek bar preview or a double tap to land on the exact second. Then, if you want to keep that moment, cut it into a clip to share.
Video files store full pictures only at intervals called keyframes; the Wikipedia article on key frames explains why that makes jumping to them fast.
